💡 Indian expat remittance tips (Netherlands)

Set up Wise first thing
Open your Wise account before you leave India. Verify your identity with Indian passport. It takes 24–48 hours to activate.
Send EUR, not INR
Always initiate transfers in EUR from your Dutch bank account. Never let the receiving Indian bank do the conversion.
DTAA and Indian tax
Money you send home is not separately taxable in India — it is your post-tax Dutch income. No double taxation on the remittance itself.
Indian bank account — keep it active
Keep your Indian savings/NRE account active. NRE accounts are tax-free in India for interest earned. Convert to NRE account before leaving.
Timing rates
The EUR/INR rate moves several rupees over a year. Sending €500 at ₹103 vs ₹108 is about ₹2,500 difference. Worth noting, but not worth stressing over for regular transfers.
