Moving to Delft from India

A small university city built around one of the world's leading engineering schools.

Delft is a small, postcard-pretty university city wedged between Rotterdam and The Hague. For Indians it means one thing above all: TU Delft, one of the world's leading engineering universities and a major route into the Netherlands for students and researchers.

Job market

Delft's economy revolves around TU Delft and the research institutions clustered around it — TNO and Deltares among them — plus the YES!Delft startup incubator. The city itself is small, but it sits minutes from Rotterdam and The Hague by train, so most professionals treat the whole region as their job market.

Housing & rent

One-bedroom flat: €1,400–1,800 / month

One-bedroom flats run roughly €1,400–1,800 a month, and the student population keeps the market tight. The campus area, Voorhof and Tanthof are common choices; the historic centre is beautiful but limited. Many residents commute in from — or out to — Rotterdam and The Hague.

Indian community

Delft's Indian community is young and student-led, centred on TU Delft's large cohort of Indian master's and PhD students. Student associations organise Diwali and Holi events, and basic Indian groceries are available locally — with the bigger South Asian shops of The Hague and Rotterdam a short train ride away.

Cost of living

Living costs are moderate — below Amsterdam and Utrecht, broadly in line with Rotterdam — but the tight student housing market is the real challenge. Securing a place before you arrive is the single most important piece of planning for a move to Delft.
